Here's something you may not know about me...

I'm a farmer. Some people might say, "oh sure you are" but I think I am. I thought maybe I was a gardener but then I realized anyone can plant and grow flowers, I have done it numerous times. Mine in Wichita were spectacular. But now, dear friends, I have ventured down a new path. I am becoming one with the earth and one with nature. I have planted a vegetable garden. Albeit small, I tilled the land by hand with a shovel and rake, a small area next to our outdoor storage shed. To go from solid grass to earthworm-loving soil is not easy. One very hot Oklahoma afternoon that is just what i did. The girls got to choose what they wanted to plant. Of course, they chose watermelon and pumpkins. I wanted to try my hand at tomato plants, afterall, my dad is THE tomato master, maybe something rubbed off. I planted 2 little tomato plants and 2 little jalapeno plants, my own little salsa garden. I also planted 2 kinds of squash, zucchini (mmmmmmmm zucchini bread) and yellow squash. Nothing better than Jay's grilled fresh squash. In the past we have always had to rely on local farmer's markets for fresh veggies but no more! Farmer Jenn is here.
The garden is doing very well, still small but mighty. I got a late start so things are running a bit behind (my dad already has tomatoes on his plants, mine are still scrawny.) Tomato envy aside, I did something today i thought i would never, ever, ever do. # 1, I went to Wal-Mart which is something I normally don't do and #2, i bought manure. Turns out, that is one of my dad's secret to a great garden. I bought 2 bags and today I spread it and also gave them a little miracle grow (i have been doing that since planting.) I think I may be well on my way. I will let you know when it's harvest time!

Here is garden day one - (oh other than the tomatoes and peppers, everything was from seed)

and here it is today. Look for more Farmer Jenn updates to come!
